More Info
You’ll want to explore parts of the island where retreating glaciers left behind a fascinating landscape. Kayaks, available for rent locally, provide another venue for exploring Maine’s beautiful coastline, where seals may tag along behind or cast a playful glimpse.
Beautiful beaches and trails abound on the island. A pristine lake is nearby for those wishing to swim in a bit warmer fresh water. Enjoy tea and scones at Nervous Nellie’s Jams and Jellies, followed by a pleasurable hike at The Tennis Preserve, a leisurely trail along the shorefront. Or hike to Barred Island where a “land bridge” appears at low tide. Be sure to pick up a trail map at the Visitor’s Center for other fun hikes in the area, as well as many other activities.
Stonington’s century old fishing village is home to Maine’s second largest active lobstering fleet. This former quarrying community bestowed our nation’s capital with much of its unique pink-toned granite. A few quarry sites are still worked on distant Crotch Island in Stonington Harbor--a quick kayak ride away!
Graced with the distinguished Haystack School of Crafts, the area has attracted a creative mix of crafts people, artists, writers, photographers, and musicians, while preserving a treasured unpretentiousness that visitors and Mainers savor.
